Which mountain range is traditionally identified as the place where Noah’s Ark came to rest?

The story behind the answer

The Mountains of Ararat are traditionally identified as the place where Noah’s Ark came to rest.

Genesis 8:4 says that the ark came to rest on the “mountains of Ararat.” The wording refers to a region or mountain area rather than unambiguously naming the modern peak called Mount Ararat. Later traditions and popular culture often focus on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey, but the biblical phrase is plural and geographically broader.

Ararat is associated with the ancient kingdom of Urartu, a region in and around the Armenian highlands. Over many centuries, writers, explorers, and religious communities have proposed different locations for the ark within that wider area.

No universally accepted archaeological evidence has confirmed the ark’s remains. Claims of discoveries have repeatedly attracted attention but have not produced a scholarly consensus. The traditional biblical location remains the Mountains of Ararat.
