Which mountain range in southern Algeria is also called the Hoggar Mountains?

The story behind the answer

The Ahaggar Mountains, also called the Hoggar Mountains, form a highland region in southern Algeria. They rise from the central Sahara and include rugged volcanic landscapes, plateaus, cliffs, and isolated peaks.

The range is centered around Tamanrasset, an important town and regional hub. Mount Tahat, the highest peak in Algeria, is located in the Ahaggar massif. The mountains are geologically distinctive because volcanic activity and erosion produced dramatic rock formations over immense periods.

The Ahaggar is also culturally associated with the Tuareg, who have long lived across the central Sahara. Ancient and historic routes connected the highlands with oases and settlements, while rock art in the wider region records earlier human activity.

The Ahaggar should not be confused with the Atlas Mountains, which lie farther north, or the Tibesti Mountains, centered mainly in Chad and extending toward Libya. “Hoggar” is a common alternate English name, while “Ahaggar” reflects the Arabic and local geographic usage.
