Which mountain range contains Emi Koussi, the Sahara’s highest peak?

The story behind the answer

The Tibesti Mountains contain Emi Koussi, the Sahara’s highest peak.

The Tibesti range occupies northern Chad and extends toward southern Libya. It is a volcanic highland rising dramatically above the surrounding desert, with Emi Koussi reaching about 3,445 metres. The range includes volcanoes, lava fields, deep valleys and isolated springs.

Tibesti’s elevation creates environmental contrasts within the Sahara. Some highland areas receive more precipitation than the surrounding plains, and seasonal water availability has supported human movement and settlement. Geological activity has also produced distinctive volcanic landforms.

The Tibesti Mountains are sometimes confused with the Ahaggar Mountains in Algeria or the Aïr Mountains in Niger. Those ranges are major Saharan highlands, but Emi Koussi belongs to Tibesti.
