Which mountain is the highest volcano on Earth?

The story behind the answer

Ojos del Salado is the highest volcano on Earth, rising to about 6,893 metres above sea level.

The stratovolcano lies in the Andes on the border between Chile and Argentina. Its summit is in the Atacama region, one of the driest places on Earth, and the mountain is part of the volcanic landscape created by the subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate.

Ojos del Salado is also often described as the highest mountain in Chile. Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the world’s highest free-standing mountain, but it is lower overall. Mauna Kea measures higher from its underwater base to its summit, yet its elevation above sea level is much lower.
