Which mountain is the highest point in the Andes?

The story behind the answer

Aconcagua is the highest point in the Andes.

Aconcagua rises to about 6,961 metres in western Argentina, close to the border with Chile. It is the highest mountain in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres and the highest peak outside Asia. The mountain lies within Aconcagua Provincial Park in Mendoza Province.

Although Aconcagua is part of the Andes and has a volcanic-looking profile, it is not an active volcano. It is a mountain formed by the tectonic interaction of the Nazca and South American plates, which continues to uplift the Andes. Its summit region is dry, cold, and exposed to severe winds.

The first recorded ascent was made in 1897 by the Swiss guide Matthias Zurbriggen, during an expedition led by Edward FitzGerald. The normal route is technically less demanding than many peaks of similar height, but altitude, weather, and remoteness make the climb extremely strenuous.
