Which mountain is the highest point in Africa, rising 5,895 meters above sea level?

The story behind the answer

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain, rising 5,895 meters above sea level.

Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano in northeastern Tanzania near the Kenyan border. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Uhuru Peak, on Kibo’s crater rim, is the mountain’s highest point and the highest point on the African continent.

The mountain rises dramatically from surrounding plains and is famous for its glaciers and snowfields, although its ice cover has declined substantially over the past century. The first recorded ascent to the summit was made in 1889 by Hans Meyer, Ludwig Purtscheller, and their local guide Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo.

Kilimanjaro is sometimes called an active volcano, but it is more precisely dormant: Kibo has not erupted in recorded history, though it retains geothermal activity. Mount Kenya is Africa’s second-highest mountain.
