Which mountain is the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters?

The story behind the answer

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain, rising to 5,895 meters above sea level.

Kilimanjaro is a volcanic massif in northeastern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the highest and contains Uhuru Peak, the summit commonly cited as Africa's highest point.

Unlike many high mountains, Kilimanjaro stands alone rather than forming part of a major mountain range. Its slopes pass through several ecological zones, including cultivated land, rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and the summit's icy environment.

Hans Meyer, Ludwig Purtscheller, and their local guide Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo made the first recorded ascent of Kibo in 1887. Kilimanjaro is a dormant, not extinct, volcanic system. Its glaciers have retreated substantially, and scientific studies have linked the long-term loss to regional climate patterns and reduced snowfall.
