Which mountain is the highest in Africa, rising 5,895 meters in Tanzania?

The story behind the answer

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain, rising 5,895 meters in Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano in northeastern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. Its highest point is Uhuru Peak on Kibo, the largest and highest of its three volcanic cones. The other principal cones are Mawenzi and Shira. Kibo has not erupted in recorded history, although scientists consider it dormant rather than extinct.

The mountain’s height and isolated position create several ecological zones, ranging from cultivated foothills and tropical forest to alpine desert and glacial terrain. Its snow and ice have declined substantially over the last century, with climate change and regional environmental conditions contributing to the loss.

The first recorded summit was reached in 1889 by Hans Meyer, Ludwig Purtscheller, and their Tanzanian guide Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo. Kilimanjaro is a major trekking destination because climbers can reach its summit without technical climbing equipment on several established routes, though altitude remains a serious risk.
