Which mountain is the highest above sea level in Africa?

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, rising to 5,895 metres above sea level.

It is a volcanic massif in northeastern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the highest and contains Uhuru Peak, the summit point commonly named by climbers.

The mountain is famous for its unusually isolated profile. Although it stands near the equator, its upper slopes have supported glaciers and ice fields. Those glaciers have greatly retreated over the last century, making Kilimanjaro an important example in discussions about changing mountain environments.

Kilimanjaro is sometimes mistaken for a single active volcano. Its cones have different histories, and Kibo is dormant rather than known to be extinct. The mountain lies within Kilimanjaro National Park.
