Which mountain in South Dakota features carved faces of four U.S. presidents?

The story behind the answer

The mountain in South Dakota featuring carved faces of four U.S. presidents is Mount Rushmore.

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is carved into granite in the Black Hills near Keystone, South Dakota. The 60-foot-high heads depict George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The presidents were chosen to symbolize the nation’s founding, expansion, development, and preservation, respectively.

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum directed the project, which began in 1927 and continued until 1941. Borglum died before the work was fully finished, and his son Lincoln Borglum helped oversee its completion. The original plan called for the presidents to be shown from the head to the waist, but funding ended the project before that larger design could be realized.

Mount Rushmore is sometimes mixed up with the Crazy Horse Memorial, another enormous Black Hills carving that remains unfinished. The site also has a complicated history: the Black Hills are sacred to the Lakota, and the land seizure that enabled the memorial remains disputed. The National Park Service manages the memorial, which attracts millions of visitors.
