Which mountain in Georgia features a giant bas-relief carving of three Confederate figures?

The story behind the answer

Which mountain in Georgia features a giant bas-relief carving of three Confederate figures? Stone Mountain is the correct answer.

Stone Mountain, east of Atlanta, Georgia, is the site of the Confederate Memorial Carving, a huge relief showing Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson on horseback. The figures were carved into the mountain’s exposed granite face rather than built as a freestanding monument.

The project began in the early 20th century amid Lost Cause commemoration and was associated with Confederate memorial organizations and the Ku Klux Klan. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum started the work, but disputes ended his involvement in 1925. Walker Hancock and Roy Faulkner later led the effort to finish it.

The carving was dedicated in 1970 and completed in 1972. It is often confused with Mount Rushmore because Borglum later became the principal sculptor of that South Dakota monument; the two sites are separate and depict entirely different groups of figures.
