The Wudang Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for their Taoist monasteries in China.
The site, officially called the Ancient Building Complex in the Wudang Mountains, lies in Hubei Province. Its temples, palaces, bridges, and religious buildings were developed and expanded especially during the Ming dynasty, when imperial patronage supported Taoist institutions there.
UNESCO inscribed the complex in 1994. The buildings were designed to fit the mountain landscape, combining religious architecture with dramatic natural surroundings. The best-known structures include the Golden Hall, the Nanyan Palace, and the Purple Cloud Temple.
Wudang is also strongly associated with internal Taoist cultivation and later martial-arts traditions. It should not be confused with Mount Tai or Mount Qingcheng, which are also important sacred mountains in Chinese religious history but are different sites.
