Answer
The Supremes
Which Motown group had Diana Ross as its lead singer? The answer is The Supremes.
The group formed in Detroit in 1959 as the Primettes, a sister act to the Primes, who later became the Temptations. The original lineup included Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Betty McGlown; Barbara Martin later replaced McGlown.
Motown signed the group in 1961 and renamed them the Supremes. In late 1963, founder Berry Gordy selected Ross as the official lead singer. Her lead vocals helped define the group's breakthrough sound, especially on “Where Did Our Love Go,” which became their first U.S. number-one pop hit in 1964.
A common mix-up is assuming Ross was the only important voice in the group. Ballard and Wilson also sang lead parts, and the Supremes' success depended on their three-part performances, Motown's production system, and the songwriting team Holland–Dozier–Holland. Ross left in 1970 to begin her solo career.
