Staff Sergeant Luther Wilson Rizzo was responsible for the 4077th’s motor pool, although his relaxed approach often contrasted with the importance of keeping the camp’s vehicles running. Rizzo was a recurring character rather than one of the original central surgeons and officers, but Bailey’s performance made him a memorable part of the camp’s enlisted world. His slow Louisiana drawl became one of the character’s defining traits.

The accent also shaped Rizzo’s fictional background. The character was initially written as being from New York City, but after producers heard Bailey’s Southern accent in early footage, they reworked Rizzo as a Louisiana native. Bailey himself was from Texas. Rizzo is sometimes confused with other enlisted or support characters, including Igor Straminsky and Zelmo Zale, but neither was the motor pool sergeant played by Bailey. In later episodes, Rizzo’s schemes included gambling, lending money, and planning to breed frogs for French restaurants after the war.
