Which moth is known as the elephant hawk-moth?

The story behind the answer

The elephant hawk-moth is Deilephila elpenor.

Deilephila elpenor is a large, fast-flying moth found across much of Europe and parts of Asia. Adults are olive-brown and pink, with bold bands that make them conspicuous at night. They visit flowers using a long proboscis and can hover while feeding, behavior that gives hawk-moths their name.

The caterpillar is usually green or brown and has markings that can make its front end look larger than it really is. When disturbed, it may retract its head and swell the front of its body, creating an eye-catching defensive display. The larvae feed on plants including willowherbs and bedstraws.

The common name does not mean the moth is related to elephants. It refers to the caterpillar's shape and size, especially its blunt, trunk-like appearance. The species is distinct from the small elephant hawk-moth, Deilephila porcellus.
