Which moth is commonly called the rosy maple moth?

The story behind the answer

The rosy maple moth is Dryocampa rubicunda.

Dryocampa rubicunda is a North American silk moth known for its striking pink and yellow coloration. Adults are small compared with giant silk moths, but their vivid colors make them easy to recognize. The species is distributed across much of the eastern and central United States and parts of Canada.

Its caterpillar is called the green-striped mapleworm. As that common name suggests, larvae feed primarily on maple trees, especially red maple and sugar maple, although they may use other trees as well. Outbreaks can produce noticeable defoliation, but healthy trees usually recover.

The rosy maple moth is sometimes mistaken for pink-colored forms of other moths. Its combination of rosy wings, yellow patches, and maple-associated larvae provides a more reliable identification clue than color alone. Like other saturniids, adults have reduced mouthparts and do not feed.
