Which moth family includes the giant silk moths known as saturniids?

The story behind the answer

The moth family that includes giant silk moths known as saturniids is Saturniidae.

Saturniidae contains giant silk moths and royal moths, including the atlas moth, luna moth, emperor moths, and many other large species. Adults often have broad wings, eyespots, or striking bands and patches that can startle predators.

Many saturniid adults have reduced or absent functional mouthparts. They rely largely on energy stored during the caterpillar stage and often live only long enough to mate and lay eggs. Their larvae are usually large and may bear spines or urticating hairs.

Saturniidae should not be confused with Bombycidae, the family containing the domesticated silkmoth Bombyx mori. Both groups are silk moths, but they are separate families with different life histories.
