The E ring is unusual because its particles are not primarily left over from Saturn’s main rings. Enceladus orbits near the ring’s densest region, and its plumes continually feed material into space. Cassini provided the decisive evidence. During close encounters in 2005, its instruments detected an enhanced population of dust particles and water-rich gas near Enceladus; later that year, images showed geyser-like jets from the south polar region. The moon is sometimes confused with Titan or Mimas because both are prominent Saturnian moons, but neither is the established source of the E ring’s plume-fed material.
