Pandora is the Saturnian moon named Pandora in the Saturnian system.
Pandora is a small inner moon of Saturn and acts as an outer shepherd of Saturn’s narrow F ring. Its gravitational influence helps confine and shape the ring, while the nearby moon Prometheus acts as the inner shepherd. The names deliberately echo figures from Greek mythology.
Voyager 1 images led to Pandora’s discovery in 1980. The moon was initially designated S/1980 S 26 before receiving its mythological name. It is irregularly shaped and has a low density, characteristics associated with many small outer Solar System bodies.
Pandora is sometimes confused with Prometheus because both moons interact with the F ring and were discovered in the same Voyager-era investigation. Their roles are complementary, but Pandora is the outer shepherd.
