Pandora is the Saturnian moon named after the mythological figure who opened the famous container.
Voyager 1 images revealed Pandora in 1980. The moon is an outer shepherd satellite of Saturn’s narrow F ring, orbiting beyond the ring and helping influence its structure together with Prometheus, which orbits on the other side. Pandora is irregularly shaped and heavily cratered.
The moon’s name creates a useful link between astronomy and mythology, but it is not the same object as Pandora, the asteroid, or the fictional worlds and companies using the name. Its designation is Saturn XVI, reflecting its historical position in the sequence of Saturnian moons rather than its distance from the planet.
