Which moon of Saturn has geysers of water ice?
Answer
Enceladus
Answer
Enceladus
The Saturnian moon with geysers of water ice is Enceladus.
Enceladus is a small, bright moon about 500 kilometers across, but its south polar region is remarkably active. Long fractures nicknamed “tiger stripes” release plumes containing water vapor, ice particles, salts and other compounds into space. These jets resemble geysers, although they are driven by activity beneath an icy crust rather than by Earth-like surface plumbing.
NASA’s Cassini spacecraft revealed the plumes during close encounters beginning in 2005. The observations showed that some of the material falls back onto Enceladus, while some escapes into space and helps supply Saturn’s faint E ring. Gravity and libration measurements later provided strong evidence for a subsurface ocean beneath the ice.
Rhea, Mimas and Titan are also major Saturnian moons, but they are not known for Enceladus-like active water-ice plumes. Titan has lakes and rivers of liquid hydrocarbons on its surface, not water geysers. Enceladus is especially important to planetary scientists because its plumes allow spacecraft to sample material from an underground ocean without drilling through the ice.
