Which monumental steel sculpture by Antony Gormley stands near Gateshead in northeast England?

The story behind the answer

Angel of the North is Antony Gormley’s monumental steel sculpture standing near Gateshead in northeast England.

Completed in 1998, the sculpture represents a human figure with outstretched wings and faces south over the A1 and the East Coast Main Line. Its location was chosen near the former Team Colliery, linking the work to the region’s industrial and mining history.

The angel is about 20 metres high, with wings spanning approximately 54 metres. It is made from weather-resistant steel and is anchored deeply because the exposed site experiences strong winds. Gormley designed the wings with a slight forward angle to suggest embrace and stability rather than simple flight.

The work became a widely recognized landmark of the North East. Its title refers both to the winged form and to the region’s industrial workers, whose labour shaped the landscape around it.
