Christ the Redeemer stands atop Mount Corcovado overlooking Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Art Deco statue was designed by the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and created with the French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski. The face was made by Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida, an often-overlooked detail in accounts of the monument.

Construction took place from 1922 to 1931, and the statue was inaugurated on 12 October 1931. It is made of reinforced concrete covered with triangular soapstone tiles. Its open-armed pose is both a Christian symbol and a visual gesture associated with protection over the city.

The monument is about 30 metres tall, excluding its pedestal, and about 38 metres tall including it. It is sometimes incorrectly described as the world’s tallest statue of Jesus; several later monuments exceed it in height. In 2007, Christ the Redeemer was selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
