Which monument is often called the world’s largest religious structure?

The story behind the answer

Angkor Wat is often called the world’s largest religious structure.

The temple complex was built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II of the Khmer Empire. It was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and was later used as a Buddhist temple, helping explain its continuing religious importance.

Angkor Wat occupies about 162.6 hectares within the larger Angkor archaeological region of Cambodia. Its central towers symbolize Mount Meru, the cosmic mountain in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, while its extensive bas-reliefs depict religious and royal stories. The complex became a national symbol of Cambodia and appears on the country’s flag. It should not be confused with the broader ancient city of Angkor, which contains many other monuments.
