He seeks immortality, studies under the Taoist master Subhuti, and learns extraordinary combat and transformation skills.

Sun Wukong becomes famous for his rebellious challenge to Heaven. After causing chaos among the celestial authorities, he is eventually subdued by the Buddha and sealed beneath a mountain for 500 years. He is later released to protect the monk Tang Sanzang on a pilgrimage to obtain Buddhist scriptures.

His signature weapon is the staff Ruyi Jingu Bang, which can change size. He can also perform the 72 transformations and travel on a somersault cloud. Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing are fellow pilgrims, but neither is the Monkey King.
