The site's largest structure is the Temple of the Masonry Altars, which rises about 16 meters. Archaeologists excavated an important tomb there containing a large carved jade head, traditionally identified as the Maya sun god Kinich Ahau, although later interpretations have connected it with the Jester God, an early symbol of rulership.

Altun Ha was a regional trade and ceremonial center with strong connections across Mesoamerica. Its name is a Yucatec Maya approximation of “Rockstone Pond,” combining words associated with a stone water deposit and water.
