Which model is Mercedes-Benz's flagship luxury sedan?

The story behind the answer

Mercedes-Benz’s flagship luxury sedan is the S-Class.

The S-Class is the brand’s full-size, top-of-the-line sedan range, positioned above the C-Class and E-Class in the traditional Mercedes-Benz passenger-car hierarchy. The name officially began with the W116 generation in 1972, although Mercedes had produced prestigious large sedans long before that designation was adopted.

“S-Class” comes from Sonderklasse, German for “special class.” The model has long served as a showcase for Mercedes-Benz engineering, comfort, and safety technology. Features introduced or popularized through S-Class generations include advanced restraint systems, electronic driver aids, sophisticated suspension systems, and increasingly digital interiors.

The A-Class is the compact entry-level family, while the C-Class occupies the compact executive category and the E-Class the executive category. Mercedes-Maybach versions offer even greater rear-seat luxury, but they are derived from the S-Class rather than replacing it as the core flagship sedan.
