Which model became the first Black woman on the cover of British Vogue?
Answer
Donyale Luna
Answer
Donyale Luna
Donyale Luna became the first Black woman on the cover of British Vogue, appearing on the March 1966 issue.
The cover was photographed by David Bailey and represented an important change in a magazine industry that had rarely placed Black models on its front pages. Luna’s striking appearance and distinctive style made her one of the most discussed models of the 1960s.
Born Peggy Ann Freeman in Detroit, Luna adopted her professional name and worked internationally. She modeled for major designers and appeared in fashion magazines, films, and performance projects.
The British Vogue achievement is often mixed up with later American Vogue milestones. Beverly Johnson became the first Black woman on American Vogue in 1974, and Naomi Campbell became the first Black model on French Vogue’s cover in 1988.
