Which MLB team retired the number 8 for both Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey?

The story behind the answer

The New York Yankees retired number 8 for both Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey.

The Yankees retired the number in 1972, honoring two generations of great catchers on the same day. Dickey wore No. 8 during his Yankees career from 1928 through 1943 and later returned as a coach. Berra, his protégé, inherited the number in 1948 and wore it throughout his celebrated playing career.

Dickey was an 11-time All-Star and a key member of the Yankees teams that won seven World Series during his playing career. Berra became an 18-time All-Star, won three American League MVP awards and collected 10 World Series championships as a player, an MLB record.

This is an unusual retirement because one uniform number is permanently associated with two players. It is also easy to confuse the honor with No. 42, which MLB retired across every team for Jackie Robinson in 1997. The Yankees' No. 8 remains a franchise-specific tribute to its famous catching lineage.
