Which MLB team is named after the state bird of Maryland?

The story behind the answer

Which MLB team is named after the state bird of Maryland? The Baltimore Orioles are named after it.

The Baltimore oriole is Maryland’s official state bird, and the bird’s striking orange-and-black plumage made “Orioles” a natural name for Baltimore baseball teams. The name has been associated with clubs in the city since the 19th century, long before the modern franchise adopted it.

The current Baltimore Orioles franchise moved from St. Louis to Baltimore in 1954. The team plays in the American League East and has made Oriole Park at Camden Yards its home since that ballpark opened in 1992.

The bird itself is the Baltimore oriole, scientifically known as Icterus galbula. It is a migratory songbird that breeds in Maryland and other parts of eastern North America. The name is not a reference to the cardinal, blue jay, or another bird-themed MLB team; those clubs are named for different birds and places.
