Which MLB team is based in Toronto?

The story behind the answer

The MLB team based in Toronto is the Toronto Blue Jays. They compete in the American League East and are Canada's only current Major League Baseball franchise.

The Blue Jays were founded as an expansion team in 1977, joining MLB alongside the Seattle Mariners. Their original home was Exhibition Stadium, but they moved into the newly opened SkyDome in 1989. The stadium was renamed Rogers Centre after Rogers Communications acquired it in 2004.

Toronto won its first American League East title in 1985, then captured consecutive World Series championships in 1992 and 1993. Those victories made the Blue Jays the first team based outside the United States to win the World Series. Their name came from a 1976 contest that attracted more than 4,000 suggestions.

The other Toronto teams in the options play different sports: the Raptors are in the NBA, the Maple Leafs are in the NHL, and the Montreal Expos were an MLB team that moved to Washington, D.C., in 2005.
