Which MLB award recognizes players for community service and sportsmanship? The answer is the Roberto Clemente Award.

Presented annually, the award honors the MLB player who best represents baseball through character, sportsmanship, community involvement, philanthropy and contributions on and off the field. Each of the 30 clubs nominates one player, and a winner is selected from those nominees.

The honor was originally called the Commissioner's Award and was first presented in 1971. It was renamed for Roberto Clemente in 1973, after the Pittsburgh Pirates star died while attempting to deliver earthquake-relief supplies to Nicaragua. Clemente's humanitarian work is central to the award's meaning.

A common mix-up is confusing this honor with the Heart & Hustle Award or a team's community-service award. The Roberto Clemente Award is an official MLB-wide recognition, and it evaluates a player's conduct and service as well as his performance. The winner is traditionally announced during the World Series.
