Which MLB award honors the best offensive player at each position?

The story behind the answer

Which MLB award honors the best offensive player at each position? The answer is the Silver Slugger Award.

The award has been presented annually since 1980. Coaches and managers select winners in both the American League and National League, judging offensive production such as batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and overall offensive value. Voters cannot select players from their own team.

The trophy is shaped like a baseball bat, stands about 3 feet tall and is plated with sterling silver. Hillerich & Bradsby, the company associated with Louisville Slugger bats, presents it.

A common mix-up is the Gold Glove Award, which honors defensive excellence rather than hitting. The Hank Aaron Award recognizes the top offensive performer in each league, while the Silver Slugger traditionally recognizes the best hitter at each listed position. Since 2022, both leagues use designated hitters, and a utility-player category has also been included.
