Apollo 11 made the first crewed landing on the Moon in July 1969.
NASA launched Apollo 11 on 16 July 1969 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility on 20 July, while Michael Collins orbited above in the command module Columbia.
Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface first, followed by Aldrin. The astronauts collected rock and soil samples, deployed scientific instruments, and photographed the landing site before returning safely to Earth on 24 July.
Apollo 10 had already rehearsed the landing approach, but it did not land. Apollo 11 is therefore distinct from both the first lunar-orbit mission and the first mission to carry people beyond low Earth orbit.
