Which Milanese ruler was associated with Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical knight?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical knight was associated with the Milanese ruler Ludovico Sforza.

Leonardo designed the humanoid machine during his years in Milan, probably in the 1490s. It is generally linked to a lavish court entertainment or pageant organized under Ludovico Sforza, the duke of Milan. Leonardo’s drawings show an armored figure with a system of pulleys, cables, and levers capable of human-like actions such as sitting, standing, and moving its arms.

The machine is often called Leonardo’s robot, but that modern label can obscure its historical character. It was a mechanical automaton, not a programmable robot with electronic control. Its movements would have been limited to the actions built into the mechanism.

The original device has not survived. In the 21st century, researchers constructed full-scale interpretations using Leonardo’s surviving drawings. These reconstructions support the idea that the design was mechanically feasible, although some details remain uncertain.
