Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” won the first MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography.
The award was presented at the inaugural VMAs in 1984, recognizing the choreography created by Jackson and Michael Peters. The “Thriller” video had been released in late 1983 and transformed the music video into a major pop-culture event through its horror-film structure, elaborate dance sequences, makeup, costumes, and cinematic production.
“Thriller” was one of the night’s most decorated videos. It also won Best Overall Performance in a Video, while Jackson received three awards overall. Its choreography award recognized the coordinated movement and performance design rather than the video’s special effects or narrative alone.
The answer is sometimes confused with “Beat It” or “Billie Jean,” two other landmark Jackson videos from the same era. “Bad” did win a later choreography nomination, but the first choreography winner was “Thriller.”
