Which Mexican state is the largest producer of avocados?

The story behind the answer

The Mexican state that produces the most avocados is Michoacán.

Michoacán lies in west-central Mexico and has become the country’s leading avocado-growing region. Its volcanic soils, highland climate, rainfall patterns, and suitable elevation create favorable conditions for avocado orchards, especially Hass production. The state is part of Mexico’s famous “Avocado Belt,” and the municipality of Tancítaro has promoted itself as the avocado capital of the world.

Mexico is the world’s largest avocado-producing country, and Michoacán contributes the overwhelming majority of Mexican production. The state has also become a major export center, supplying markets in the United States, Canada, Europe, and elsewhere. Avocado farming supports growers, seasonal workers, packing facilities, transport companies, and food processors.

This success has also created serious environmental and social concerns. Orchard expansion has been linked to deforestation, habitat loss, water pressure, and disputes over land and resources. Organized-crime groups have also extorted growers in parts of the state. These issues do not change the production answer: among Mexico’s states, Michoacán remains the leading avocado producer.
