Which Mexican poet and essayist won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1990?
Answer
Octavio Paz
Answer
Octavio Paz
Octavio Paz won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1990 as the Mexican poet and essayist whose writing united poetry, philosophy, history, and cultural criticism.
Born in Mexico City in 1914, Paz began publishing poetry as a teenager. His work frequently examined language, solitude, identity, eroticism, and Mexico’s place in the modern world. His best-known essay collection, The Labyrinth of Solitude (1950), explored Mexican history and national character.
Paz also wrote the long poem Sunstone (1957) and worked for decades as a diplomat. He resigned as Mexico’s ambassador to India in 1968 in protest after the government’s violent response to the Tlatelolco student massacre.
The Nobel citation praised his “impassioned writing with wide horizons.” Paz remains Mexico’s only Nobel laureate in Literature. The distractors are other major Latin American authors, but none won the Literature prize in 1990.
