Which Mexican general later served as president and fought at the Battle of Puebla?
Answer
Porfirio Díaz
Answer
Porfirio Díaz
Porfirio Díaz later served as Mexico’s president and fought at the Battle of Puebla.
Díaz was a Mexican military officer who took part in the defense against the French intervention. At Puebla in 1862, he commanded troops during the fighting and helped resist the French attack, although Ignacio Zaragoza was the overall Mexican commander.
Díaz later became Mexico’s dominant political figure. He served as president for multiple periods and ruled for most of the era known as the Porfiriato, which lasted from 1876 until the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution forced him from power in 1911.
He is sometimes confused with Benito Juárez, the president whose government faced the French intervention. Juárez was the head of state, while Díaz was a military commander who later became president himself.
