Magdalena is the central Mexican-American teenager in the 2006 film Quinceañera.
The film follows Magdalena as she prepares for her fifteenth-birthday celebration in Los Angeles. Her family and community expect the event to be a major moment, but personal revelations and family tensions complicate the preparations.
Magdalena’s story allows the film to examine how a traditional celebration can carry different meanings for different people. It can express family pride and religious identity, while also exposing disagreements about sexuality, respectability, responsibility, and belonging.
The character is sometimes confused with protagonists from other Latino-themed films. Selena is the singer portrayed in the 1997 biographical film Selena, while Esperanza is associated with Sandra Cisneros’s novel The House on Mango Street. Neither is the protagonist of Quinceañera.
