Which Metallica member played bass on every track of The Black Album?
Answer
Jason Newsted
Answer
Jason Newsted
Jason Newsted played bass on Metallica's The Black Album. He was the band’s bassist during the album’s recording and appears in its personnel credits.
Newsted joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of Cliff Burton. By the time of the Black Album sessions, he had already recorded ...And Justice for All, although the audible bass presence on that earlier album became a frequent subject of discussion. The Black Album presented a fuller and more noticeable bass sound within Bob Rock’s production.
Newsted also contributed creatively during the writing period. He wrote the main riff for “My Friend of Misery,” which was initially intended to be an instrumental. A common mistake is to credit Robert Trujillo, but Trujillo did not join Metallica until 2003, long after the Black Album was recorded.
