Which Metallica bassist played on the band's 1991 album Metallica, better known as The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Jason Newsted played bass on Metallica's 1991 album Metallica, better known as The Black Album.

Newsted joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton. He had already appeared on the 1987 EP The $5.98 E.P. – Garage Days Re-Revisited and on ...And Justice for All, but Metallica was his second full-length studio album with the band.

On the album, Newsted is credited with bass, while James Hetfield handled vocals and rhythm guitars, Lars Ulrich played drums, and Kirk Hammett played lead guitar. The four musicians form the core performing lineup heard on the record.

A frequent mix-up is associating Robert Trujillo with the album because he later became Metallica's bassist. Trujillo joined the band in 2003, more than a decade after The Black Album. Newsted remained Metallica's bassist until his departure in 2001, so he—not Burton or Trujillo—is the bassist credited on the 1991 release.
