Which Metallica bassist performs on the band's 1991 album Metallica?

The story behind the answer

Jason Newsted performs bass on Metallica’s 1991 album Metallica.

Newsted joined Metallica after the 1986 death of bassist Cliff Burton. He first appeared on a Metallica release with The $5.98 E.P. – Garage Days Re-Revisited and then played on the studio album ...And Justice for All. Metallica was his second full studio album with the band.

The Black Album gave Newsted a more audible and substantial bass role than the previous record. Producer Bob Rock helped him develop a bass sound that supported the drums and guitars without masking them. The album’s cleaner production made the rhythm section easier to hear.

Newsted also contributed creatively. He wrote the main riff of “My Friend of Misery,” which was originally intended to be an instrumental. The finished song includes writing credits for Newsted, Hetfield, and Ulrich. Newsted remained Metallica’s bassist until leaving the band in 2001.
