Jason Newsted is the Metallica bassist credited on every track of the 1991 album The Black Album. He was the band’s bassist during the album’s recording and release.
Newsted joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of founding bassist Cliff Burton. The Black Album was his first Metallica studio album to follow ...And Justice for All, on which the bass was famously mixed very quietly. The new record gave the bass a more audible role.
Newsted also contributed the main riff for “My Friend of Misery.” That song was initially intended to be an instrumental, continuing a pattern in which earlier Metallica albums included instrumental tracks. Newsted left Metallica in 2001, before the recording of St. Anger, and was later replaced by Robert Trujillo.
