Copper has the chemical symbol Cu and atomic number 29. Unlike most metals, which appear gray or silver, copper reflects light in a way that gives it a distinctive reddish or orange appearance. Its surface can gradually develop a green patina when exposed to air and moisture.

Copper is an excellent conductor of electricity and heat, making it important in wiring, motors, plumbing, heat exchangers, and electronics. It is also the base metal in alloys such as bronze and brass. Adding tin produces traditional bronze, while adding zinc produces brass.

Gold also has a warm color, but pure gold is yellow rather than reddish. Iron can develop red-brown rust, yet freshly polished iron is silvery-gray and the color comes from corrosion rather than the metal itself.
