Which memorial in Berlin commemorates the approximately six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust?

The story behind the answer

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin commemorates the approximately six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

Also called the Holocaust Memorial, it occupies a large site near the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag. The memorial consists of 2,711 concrete stelae arranged in a grid across uneven ground. Architect Peter Eisenman designed the field, which opened to the public in 2005.

The site’s underground Information Centre presents the names and biographies of Jewish victims and families, along with documentation about deportations and killing. The memorial’s abstract design deliberately avoids a single figurative image or inscription representing every victim.

It is distinct from the Topography of Terror, another Berlin historical site focused mainly on the institutions of Nazi persecution, including the Gestapo and SS. The Berlin memorial specifically identifies the murdered Jews of Europe, while other memorials in the city commemorate different victim groups.
