“My Wife” appeared on Who’s Next, The Who’s 1971 studio album, and was written by bassist John Entwistle. It became one of his best-known contributions to the band because he handled far more than the vocal: he also played bass, piano, and the brass parts heard in the arrangement. The song’s comic, anxious lyrics were inspired by Entwistle’s fear that his wife might react angrily after he stayed out drinking.

The track was recorded at Olympic Studios in London in May 1971. It was not part of Pete Townshend’s Lifehouse project, despite being included on the finished Who’s Next album. Entwistle reportedly wrote it partly to replace “Boris the Spider” in the group’s live set, since he had grown tired of performing that earlier song.
