Born in Wembley, England, in 1946, Moon joined The Who in 1964 and became famous for his explosive, highly unorthodox drumming. His playing helped define the band's powerful live sound, while his wild behaviour earned him the nickname “Moon the Loon.”

Moon died in London on 7 September 1978, shortly after The Who released the album Who Are You. He was 32. The cause was an overdose of clomethiazole, a medication prescribed during an attempt to manage alcohol withdrawal.
