Which medieval queen of France became Queen of England after her marriage to Henry II?

The story behind the answer

Eleanor of Aquitaine became Queen of England after marrying Henry II.

Eleanor was already Duchess of Aquitaine and one of the most powerful heiresses in 12th-century Europe when she married Henry, then Duke of Normandy and Count of Anjou, in 1152. When Henry became king of England in 1154, Eleanor became queen consort. Her lands and political connections greatly strengthened the Angevin dynasty.

The marriage produced eight children, including the future kings Richard I and John. Eleanor spent periods governing territories on Henry’s behalf, but their relationship became strained. In 1173, she supported a rebellion by several of their sons against Henry and was imprisoned for many years afterward.

Eleanor later became especially famous as the mother of Richard the Lionheart, but her own political career was remarkable. After Henry’s death in 1189, she helped secure Richard’s succession and acted as a powerful figure during his reign. She was queen of both France and England during her lifetime.
