Saint-Denis Basilica has the famous Jesse Window, one of Europe’s oldest large stained-glass windows. It belongs to the early Gothic glazing program created for the rebuilt choir in the twelfth century.

The window depicts the genealogy of Christ through the biblical Jesse Tree, which symbolically grows from Jesse, the father of King David. Its imagery expresses dynastic and theological connections between the Old Testament and Christ.

Abbot Suger, who directed the rebuilding of Saint-Denis, used stained glass as a major part of the church’s new Gothic visual program. Colored light, biblical narratives, and precious materials were intended to transform the choir into a luminous sacred space.
